I'm not sure if DAFIF (Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File) data is still publicly accessible, but would it be possible to include this data as an import type?
I have a specific need to import the data and strip it into it's individual components (navaids, waypoints, aerodromes, etc) before changing their attributes and exporting them to vector format.

- edited May 2013This has been on our todo list (internal item #11748) for a while, but given the age of the format it hasn't been a high priority. I'll add a note that it was requested from here so when and if it gets done this thread will be notified.
Thanks,
Mike

Blue Marble Geographics for Coordinate Conversion, Image Reprojection and Vector Translation - Global Mapper UserPosts: 39Trusted UserHey Mike,
What did you mean by age of the format? - edited May 2013I mean that it hasn't been publicly available for a while (2006 is what I see on Wikipedia), at least from NGA. Is there some current source of data that is publishing in this format?
Thanks,
Mike

Blue Marble Geographics for Coordinate Conversion, Image Reprojection and Vector Translation - Global Mapper UserPosts: 39Trusted UserI know this is an old thread, but has the DAFIF format been added to any of the latest versions of GM? I know the format isn't publicly available, but the military and other government departments still use it and it continues to be updated every 28 days.
- edited September 2014Hi Sean,
The enhancement request for that format (ID#11748) is still pending and there is no assigned target date for implementation at this time. Where are you getting updated, current data from for the DAFIF format?
Regards,
Jasmine
Edit: Spelling - Global Mapper UserPosts: 39Trusted UserHi Jasmine
I'm getting the monthly updates directly from the Canadian military Mapping and Charting Estsblishment in Ottawa. I'll assume they're getting it directly from the source. I know FME can handle the format and do what I want to do, but we aren't getting that software.
This function would be an absolutely incredible increase in our capabilities and, of course, would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Sean - This is old, but I too am interested in importing DAFIF data. It is a simple text import and I suspect if I tweak the .txt file I could make GM happy, but as there are regular DAFIF updates and I think there may be some variation in the columns from one DAFIF data set to another (airport reference point file vs. traffic rout lines file) it would be wonderful if GM would be able to read the files directly without a lot of work on my end. -Thanks. :-)
- Global Mapper UserPosts: 39Trusted UserIf you were able to send them a current version of the data, perhaps they could work it into an update for the current version, if it's a simple fix? My need to be able to manipulate this data also still exists.
The status of feature request #11748 to import DAFIF data has not changed. If you can provide a data sample and a DAFIF specification (or a link to one) it would help us determine how much work would be required. This is old, but I too am interested in importing DAFIF data. (email addr or ftp site?)
- You can attach the file here, or e-mail it to Blue Marble Geographics Support ([email protected]) and refer to this thread and bug #11748. If the file is too large, the support folks can provide you with FTP information. In either case, I recommend putting the file in a zip archive.
- Global Mapper UserPosts: 39Trusted UserI'm not sure if 3dvr_m4 uploaded the data so I've got the latest one ready to go, but it's just < 60 MB.
DAFIF (/ˈdeɪfɪf/) or the Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File is a comprehensive database of up-to-date aeronautical data, including information on airports, airways, airspaces, navigation data and other facts relevant to flying in the entire world, managed by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) of the United States.
Withdrawal of public access[edit]
DAFIF was publicly available until October 2006 through the Internet, however it was closed to public access because 'increased numbers of foreign source providers are claiming intellectual property rights or are forewarning NGA that they intend to copyright their source'.[1] Currently only Federal and State government agencies, authorized government contractors and Department of Defense customers are able to access the DAFIF data.
At the time of the announcement, the NGA did not say who the 'foreign source providers' were. It was subsequently revealed that the Australian Government was behind the move. The Australian government-owned corporation Airservices Australia in September 2003 started charging for access to Australian data. Rather than exclude the Australian data, the NGA opted to stop making the data available to the public.[2]
USFIF[edit]
A product called USFIF (pronounced as yoos-fəf) or the United States Flight Information File which contains only data related to the United States was available on the NGA website until October 2007. NGA no longer hosts any aeronautical information on the publicly available website.
Replacement for Google Earth Data[edit]
Since the DAFIF data has ceased to be available to the public, new sources of the data have arrived, though none is (yet) a complete replacement:
- In Google Earth Format (KML) Google Earth 3D Airspace
- Started soon after the withdrawal of the DAFIF data, the OurAirports web site is a community effort to produce an open (Public Domain) database of airports and navigation aids—nightly CSV data dumps are available from the site. Since OurAirports is open source, there are a lot of duplicate airports in the system and the data is not necessarily accurate as an official source would be.
- OpenStreetMap holds information about many aerodromes, and can be downloaded through the Overpass service.
- In other open formats, publicly contributed data, the Worldwide Soaring Turnpoint Exchange: Airspace
